| Socializing A Puppy | ||||||
| It is very important that Chesapeake puppies be well socialized. Our puppies are well socialized from newborns until they leave our home but it is imperative that you continue the process from the time you pick up your puppy until well into adulthood. Chesapeakes can be protective and possessive by nature but if they are properly socialized, they will become good citizens. To socialize a puppy, take it wherever you go, within reason. (Remember, until your puppy has been fully vaccinated, keep him away from other animals and areas other animals have been). Let your puppy experience different places, buildings, other dogs and most especially, people. Be sure that their experiences are positive ones. Negative experiences can have long lasting effects on your puppy. Invite friends and family to your home regularly so that your puppy has positive feelings about people. It is important to socialize both inside and outside of your home. The more experiences your puppy has the more comfortable he will be throughout his life. Once the puppy has acclimated to your home and its surroundings, gradually introduce household sounds such as garbage disposals, vacuums, music, etc. Also, incorporate things that happen in your house frequently such as someone carrying in grocery bags or kids playing with loud toys. You will be glad you made this effort when you see that your puppy has developed into a friendly and well socialized adult dog. |
